GI as a Tool, not a Replacement

Despite the potential benefits of guaranteed income (GI), some remain skeptical, believing it’s intended to replace the existing welfare system. However, GI is not meant to dismantle traditional welfare; instead, it aims to address the gaps that leave many people without sufficient support.

While welfare programs are essential, they often come with strict eligibility requirements and limited flexibility, leaving out individuals who don’t fit neatly into predefined categories. GI is designed to work alongside these programs, offering immediate, flexible financial support that can fill in where traditional welfare may fall short.

On Give Miami Day 2024, community members have the opportunity to support organizations that explore GI as a complement to the existing welfare state. By contributing to these initiatives, donors help create a more resilient support network that meets the diverse needs of our community. Rather than replacing welfare, GI strengthens the social safety net, bridging the gaps and providing a path to greater stability and dignity for those who might otherwise fall through the cracks.
